The Halton Centre for Child Care

Our Programs

Ages 3-18 months
Child/Teacher Ratio 3:1
Maximum 10 Infants

Our infant schedule varies from day to day at the Halton Centre for Child Care. Each child, depending on age and development, will have different needs so our daily schedule is flexible. Our caring infant staff recognizes that each infant has a very unique, individualized schedule and we make every effort to implement your child’s home schedule into our daily routine.

The toys are changed every week to offer variety. The program focus in the infant room is primarily gross motor and sensory. Staff facilitates child led play and exploration. The gentle nature of our infant staff is paramount in the strong attachments that quickly build between teacher and child.

Our Wee Tots program is designed for the oldest of our infants. In preparation for their transition to the toddler room our Wee Tots participate in organized songs, stories, fine motor exposure and sensory experiences including creative art.

The Halton Centre Infant Room offers separate eating, sleeping and play areas. Our outdoor play space is accessed directly from the classroom. There are 10 children and 4 teachers in the infant room.

It is our mandate to provide stimulating, nurturing care so that infants can develop into confident, secure and adventuresome toddlers.

Ages 18 months – 2.5 years
Child/Teacher Ratio: 5:1
Maximum 15 Toddlers

The children in our Toddler program are often graduates from our Infant Room. However, it is not uncommon to welcome new faces as well. Teachers in the Toddler room strive to offer innovative and unique learning experiences for the highly interested and explorative toddler. We implement activities that challenge motor skills and dexterity while embracing their desire to be physically active and manipulate their environment.

Daily programming includes but is not limited to sensory experiences, creative activities, group circle time, interactive story time and the introduction to early academics such as letter and number recognition.

Teachers offer the toddlers many free play opportunities throughout the day but carefully select play materials to optimize the child’s learning potential. By the time they graduate to Preschool, our Toddlers will have the fundamental tools they need to succeed.

Ages 2.5-3.8 years
Child/Teacher Ratio: 8:1
Maximum 19 Preschoolers

The Preschool Room continues to focus on meeting the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of children. We believe that each aspect of development is interrelated and strive to provide a program that meets the holistic needs of children. It is our goal to assist children in reaching his/her potential.

Our curriculum is developed with the understanding that play is the most valuable vehicle for learning. It is in play that the child refines pre-reading, social, cognitive and motor skills. Of course, building and maintaining a child’s sense of self-worth and independence is paramount in his/her overall success. Our weekly program plans offer children opportunities to develop in all areas of growth. The preschool program strikes a balance between work time and free play. During work time, children are encouraged to work with teachers on pre-reading, writing and early math skills.

Ages 3.8-5 years
Child/Teacher Ratio 10:1
Max 20 JK

The Junior Kindergarten program at the Halton Centre is designed to expose children to all of the learning opportunities they would otherwise be exposed to at ‘big school’. With a strong focus on mathematics, early literacy and skill development our JK program is both a great preparatory and complementary program for school with the added benefit of a 10:1 child/teacher ratio to ensure each child is reaching his/her maximum potential.

In this program staff utilizes teaching tools such as the Learning Carpet, Jolly Phonics, learning Centres, computers, free play, group time, exploration and discovery to achieve learning objectives.

Learning Carpet – used on a weekly basis, Learning Carpet activities are an interactive, hands-on visual way of learning and reinforcing your child’s math skills and development.

Jolly Phonics – Jolly Phonics introduces children to literacy using letter sounds, action songs, poems and worksheets. As letter sounds are learned we are able to build on that knowledge and help children learn the fundamentals of early reading.

Learning Centres – Learning Centres integrate numeracy, literacy, science, fine motor, arts and movement into the classroom. This way, even unstructured play time is an opportunity for learning.

Computers – Carefully selected computer games are utilized to enhance regular programming and challenge thinking and problem solving skills.

Free Play – At the Halton Centre we know that play is a child’s work. Through play, children are able to express themselves, problem solve, use critical thinking skills and develop social relationships. Play helps inspire the holistic growth of children.

Group Time – This time is organized and directed by a teacher. During group time children are introduced to concrete learning concepts and encouraged to be active participants.

Early Risers is a program which is run in our gallery daily from 1:30-2:30 and is an extension of the play learning environment offered within our classrooms. Early Risers is intended for children who do not nap or wake early. The program offers a variety of age appropriate activities including puzzles, floor and table toys, creative art, songs and stories. We are able to accommodate up to 8 children daily at our Early Risers program.
